I'm calling to thank Speaker Cox for moving Senate Bills 998 and 1109 out of the Rules Committee. These bills would provide critical protections against housing and public employment discrimination to LGBT Virginians.

Since the House versions of these bills did not receive a full or fair hearing, I'm also asking Speaker Cox to use his leadership power to ensure the Senate bills do, in the General Laws Committee.

I'm calling to ask Delegate ------ to support nondiscrimination protections in housing AND public employment for gay and transgender Virginians. House bills did not receive a full and fair hearing this year, but Senate bills 998 and 1109 still could. They are in the House General Laws Committee for consideration and must be heard by Feb. 18.

Most of his constituents in Virginia Beach already support these protections. Our city council included LGBT nondiscrimination in its list of legislative priorities earlier this month, and hundreds of local businesses and economic groups, including the Resort Advisory Commission and the Restaurant Association, are on record as supporting these protections.

Furthermore, polls show that 67 percent of Virginians want LGBT people protected from housing discrimination, and 73 percent want employment protections. That includes 53 percent of Republicans who want housing protections, and 63 percent who want employment protections.

Please do whatever you can to ensure these bills get a full and fair hearing, and move swiftly to a full House vote.
