VIRGINIA PUBLIC SAFETY OFFICIALS FOR NONDISCRIMINATION PROTECTIONS
As members of the law enforcement and public safety community, we believe it is our duty to ensure that Virginia is a safe and welcoming place for all people, including members of the LGBT community.
LGBT people are our friends, neighbors, and family. They should have the same basic protections as everyone else - to be able to live their lives with safety, privacy, and dignity and without fear of discrimination. That’s why we support comprehensive nondiscrimination protections for the LGBT community in employment, housing, and public spaces.
Some opponents claim that these protections could negatively impact public safety. The reality is, safety and privacy are important to all of us. That’s why we have laws in place that make it illegal to harm or harass people, and the good news is that will never change. Updating the law to protect LGBT people from discrimination will make our communities safer without putting anyone in harm’s way.
We take our commitment seriously to serve and protect our entire community, including our LGBT friends, family members, coworkers, and neighbors.
